je n'avais pas d'idée précise de ce qu'allait de je n'avais pas d'idée précise de ce qu'allait devenir la prise guitare-choeur de la deuxième partie de "change my name". j'avais l'intuition d'aller enregistrer la forêt, pour placer la chorale au milieu des oiseaux et des arbres. puis est venue l’idée d’y inclure d’autres voix humaines, mais pas la mienne. alors j’ai pensé aux échanges précieux par messages, et en particulier par messages vocaux; j’ai regardé ce que ça faisait d’y inclure des extraits et ça a eu du sens pour moi, si bien que ça m’a guidé vers un texte, une mélodie, la deuxième partie de la chanson. c'est finalement avec louis qu'on a donné forme à tout ça au studio farrago à crissier; voici un tout petit bout filmé de ce processus! — i didn’t have a clear idea of what that guitar-and-choir take would become in the second half of “change my name.” i had this intuition to go record the forest, to place the choir among birds and trees. then came the idea of including other human voices—but not mine. so i thought about those precious exchanges through messages, especially voice notes; i tried adding some fragments of them, and it made sense to me. it led me toward lyrics and a melody, and it became the second part of the song. in the end, louis and i shaped it all at studio farrago in crissier—here’s a tiny glimpse of that process!
en écrivant le picking de la deuxième partie de en écrivant le picking de la deuxième partie de « change my name », j’avais toute une chorale en tête. un endroit sans mots. qui respire après les guitares fuzz de la première partie, qui se reconstruit petit à petit. j’en ai fait une démo en chantant toutes les voix; ça nous a permis de les relever et d’en écrire des partitions, mais c’était évident qu’il fallait l’enregistrer en live, guitare-chorale. alors le jour de mon anniversaire, j’ai invité des proches au studio, et on a enregistré le coeur de cette deuxième moitié de chanson en un après-midi. le plus beau des cadeaux! @alexismgnd / @biscuitproduction a documenté le processus de fabrication du disque dont cette session, et je vous en montre ici un petit aperçu. — while writing the fingerpicking for the second part of « change my name », i had a whole choir in mind. a place without words. something that breathes after the fuzz guitars of the first part, slowly rebuilding itself. i recorded a demo by singing all the voices myself; it allowed us to transcribe them and write out the scores—but it was clear that we had to record it live, guitar and choir together. so on my birthday, i invited some close friends to the studio, and in one afternoon we managed to capture the heart of this second half of the song. the most beautiful gift! @alexismgnd / @biscuitproduction documented the making-of process of the album, including this session, and here’s a small glimpse i’d like to share with you.
Depuis la première bribe de mémo vocal jusqu’à la version finale de « change my name », il y a beaucoup d’étapes. La composition - rejouer mille fois les mêmes passages en tâtonnant. Je filme pour ne pas oublier les erreurs heureuses. J’ai tout sauf le riff principal - une installation d’amplis avec le son presque final m’aidera. L’arrangement ensuite, avec Louis Jucker, avec qui on imagine les sons des instruments qui donneront la couleur du morceau - on ajoute notre orgue bluesy préféré. Puis avec Luc Hess, qui choisit les fûts adaptés à l’énergie du morceau. La production enfin, en enregistrant le squelette du morceau puis en ajoutant des couches aux parties qui en manquent. Aujourd’hui, c’est le premier single de mon album à venir! — From the very first voice memo to the final version of « change my name », there were many steps along the way. Composition – playing the same sections over and over again, feeling my way through. I film to make sure I don’t forget the happy accidents. I have everything except the main riff – a wall of amps with an almost-final sound will help unlock it. Arrangement, next, with Louis Jucker – together we imagine the sounds that will shape the track’s identity. We add our favorite bluesy organ. Then with Luc Hess, who picks the drum kit that best matches the energy of the song. Production, finally – we record the skeleton of the track, then build it up by adding layers where they’re needed. Today, it’s the first single from my upcoming album!
